Probably the most memorable one I did was with Polly Mellen and Paulina Porizkova [in 1986]. They had tried to put Paulina on the cover a couple times, but for some reason she could never make it. She was so beautiful, but Dick Avedon never got a picture he was really happy with. So they booked me for one last cover try, and I decided to make her extremely soft—no obvious makeup, no dark shadow on the eyes—just very clean, very fresh. And they finally loved it. Dick loved it; Polly loved it. They just loved the way she looked.
